Month-to-Date Index

Create a month-to-date (MTD) index and see your performance rate for each day.

Last updated: July 22, 2022

A month-to-date index is similar to a month-to-date target. Where MTD target displays a target value that increases every day along with the number of calendar working days, the MTD index displays a percentage value of your progress. The percentage values will change each day, depending on how much progress you make to reach the target.

Dashboards - Comparison MTD Index vs MTD Target

The month-to-date index calculates your progress in percentages, whereas the month-to-date target displays the values in decimal numbers.

To create a month-to-date index, go to KPI management > Formulas > + New formula in Plecto.
You can build a formula like the following:

Formula - MTD Index
  1. Give your formula a title.
  2. Add a new Data function component that calculates your current value (sum of expenses, number of calls, number of booked meetings, etc.).
  3. Add a new Group component.
    1. Inside the group, add a Data function that calculates your target value (total budget, target number of calls, etc.).
    2. Add a Date function component that counts the number of Workdays (or Days, depending on what KPIs you want to look at) from Widget Start date to Widget End date.
  4. Add a separate Group component to the formula that counts the number of Workdays (or Days) from Widget Start date to Today.
  5. Now drag the larger group component (step 3) onto the other group component (step 4) so that you end up with a group within a group.
  6. Change the operators between your components, as shown in the image above.
  7. Set the number format to Percent.
  8. Click Save to finish.

💡 When you add the formula to a widget, set the time period to the current month.

An easier way to create a month-to-date index is to combine two of your existing formulas in the new formula. For example, if you have a formula that calculates your sales this month and a formula that calculates your month-to-date sales target, you can use them both to calculate the index.

To create a month-to-date index, go to KPI management > Formulas > + New formula. You will have to add two Existing formula components to create the index. See the video below.

  1. Give your formula a title.
  2. Add the Existing formula component, then select the formula that calculates your current KPI.
  3. Add the Existing formula component and choose your month-to-date target formula.
  4. Change the operator between these two components to ➗.
  5. Set the number format to Percent.
  6. To finish, click Save.

💡 When you add the formula to a widget, make sure to set the time period to the current month.

Tip – Use the formula to see your Year-to-date Index

Use the same formula to see your YTD index on the dashboard. Add it to the widget and change the time period to the Current year. Build the formula with custom workdays to get the most accurate metrics!
